A ground breaking celebration was held at Southwest Tech in preparation for a $26.2 million campus improvement and expansion project. The ground breaking marked an historic investment that southwest Wisconsin residents have made in technical education and job training. Guest speaker was Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle.
"We are delighted to have the Governor speaking at this historic event," said Dr. Karen R. Knox, college president. Several hundred people from the region joined in the celebration which will offer life-changing opportunities represented through the new facilities.
Dr. Knox further reported "Southwest Tech responds to the training and educational needs for over 12,000 southwest Wisconsin residents each year, these campus improvement projects will allow the College to enhance that mission."
Construction will begin in April on 12 building and renovation projects. The planned campus improvements were part of last spring's $31.9 million measure approved by voter referendum.
New facilities that will soon be under construction are a healthcare sciences facility, agriculture machinery and auto technology center, and a campus childcare center. A separate ground breaking will be held for a planned public safety training complex at a later date. In addition to three newly built educational facilities, numerous renovation improvement projects of existing learning space are included in the construction plans.
