April 2019 Headlines

Fennimore Chamber Meeting – April 11 Features Fireball Run Video

The Fennimore Area Chamber of Commerce will hold their first membership meeting on Thursday, April 11.  The noon luncheon will be held at Hickory Grove Golf Course.  The menu includes a salad, Lasagna and Chicken Alfredo and garlic bread for $11.50; reservations required by calling 822-3599 or promo@fennimore.com.

The special feature of the meeting will be the showing of the Fennimore Fireball Run video.  The Marketing committee will be sharing ways they will be using the video to market our community as a great place to live, own a business and enjoy all of the natural beauty the Fennimore area has to offer. Input from community is also welcome for marketing ideas.

All businesses are encouraged to share information about their business during the Once Around portion of the meeting.  Chamber members and guests are welcome; mark your calendars and plan to attend.

Fennimore Citywide Garage Sales

The Chamber sponsored citywide garages sales are scheduled to take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday May 16, 17 and 18.  Registration forms will be available Monday, April 15 at the City Clerk’s office, the Fennimore banks, at the Fennimore Times and online.  Registration forms should be filled out and turned in with the fee to the City Clerk’s office no later than Tuesday, May 7 at which time you pick up your yard sign. The Clerk’s office is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.  If you need to make special arrangements, please contact Carrie Friederick 608-822-6119.  The chamber thanks the City Clerk’s office for chairing this committee.  The city office feels this is a great way for the City to encourage re-use of items instead of ending up in the garbage.

Fennimore Spring Clean Up

The Fennimore Director of Public Works announces spring clean-up days are scheduled for Friday, April 26 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, April 27 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.  All items should be taken to the City’s recycling center where dumpsters will be available onsite. We are unable to accept appliances with Freon; those should be taken to recycling centers. Sorry, no curbside pick-up is available.

Community Tree Care Workshop April 27

An educational training opportunity for Fennimore and Lancaster landowners will be offered Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Fennimore Memorial building. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.   The cost to attend is free thanks in part to an urban forestry grant from the State of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Forestry Program and the City of Fennimore and City of Lancaster.

So what should attendees expect from the workshop?  Dan Traas, certified arborist with Ranger Services, Inc will provide instruction on how to care for your trees along with property tree planting. An emphasis will be on how trees grow and what you can do for them to enhance their health, vigor and longevity.  Come learn about selection of tree species and location, proper planting techniques, maintenance during the life of the tree, proper pruning techniques. Information on the Emerald Ash Borer and other tree diseases and trimming demonstrations. There will be a time for questions and answer period.

A little more than a year ago during the Forming Fennimore Future goals setting some local volunteers heard about a need for community volunteer tree board. They held their first meeting shortly thereafter and have done an awesome job moving forward, writing grants and just recently were informed Fennimore will be designated as a “Tree City!”   Kudos to this dedicated group of Fennimore volunteers. Again, there is no cost to attend, however reservations are recommended so they can plan for light refreshments and handout materials.

Fun Fest 2019 Plans

Members of the Fun Fest committee are busy making plans for Fennimore’s largest festival. Fun Fest is scheduled to take place Friday and Saturday May 31 and June 1, 2019. Events for this year include cars show, girls softball tournament, fireworks, chainsaw carver, live auction, kids tractor pull, parade, music, carnival rides, dodgeball tournament, bean bags, mechanical bull and more. See the Fun Fest page for more information.

Posters will be ordered soon so anyone wishing to be listed as a sponsor should send in their sponsorship forms to Jeff Hagen at fennimorefunfest@hotmail.com.

Fun Fest is also offering organizations an opportunity to make some money by managing one of the shifts at a concession stand.  Interested parties should get in contact as soon as possible for their best choice of shifts.

The Fun Fest parade theme for 2019 is “Family Traditions”.  In an effort to help the parade announcers they ask that parade entry forms with brief descriptions are turned in by Friday May 25.  This year’s parade route will begin near the Schwan’s Depot and travel to the east with the parade ending on Switzer Road.

All Fun Fest Forms may be found on the Fun Fest page.

Fennimore Welcomes Volunteers

Would you like to get out of the house and have an opportunity to meet area residents and visitors passing through Fennimore?   Could you set aside a few hours a month during the summer to assist at Fennimore’s museums?

Both the Fennimore Railroad Historical Museum and Friends of the Fennimore Doll and Toy Museum are always in need of volunteers.  Both are currently preparing to open in late May for their 2019 tourist season.  If you are interested in volunteering for one of the shifts please contact Greg Ashmore 822-6167 for the Railroad Museum 608-485-2408 or Connie Neal for the Fennimore Doll and Toy Museum 608-822-7920.

Message from Mayor Boebel

Recently, a public informational gathering was held at the Memorial Building. I would like to provide an update to that session and relate some facts. Since this is such a big change to the residents of the City of Fennimore, I would like to limit this update to facts only in hopes of at least attempting to cut down on misinformation.

At the Council Meeting held last Monday, March 11, a motion was passed to sub-contract for the garbage and recycling pick up currently performed by City employees. In a separate motion, also passing, was to move ahead with discussions with the low-bidder for these services. Attempting to address some of the concerns, we have just been informed three sizes of totes will be available. The sizes are: 95-gallon, 65-gallon, and 35-gallon. The 95-gallon and 65-gallon sizes are available for viewing in the area of the Clerk’s Office. The 35-gallon option was just recently discovered, and we will also be getting one of those for public display. The intention is to work through the details concerning this topic and once everything is worked out, those details will obviously be shared with the public. The reason for this update is I felt the 35-gallon option was important enough to several residents that I wanted to get the word out as best I can at this time.

Thank you and stay tuned. I do appreciate us all working together on this and understand change is difficult. I have complete confidence that our Council will continue to make well-informed decisions that are for the best in moving Fennimore forward.

Thank you again, Ryan Boebel
