Chamber Chicken BBQ

The menu is all set for this year’s Chamber of Commerce Annual Chicken BBQ scheduled for Tuesday, July 9. The meal includes ½ BBQ chicken, cole slaw, baked beans, dinner roll, butter, and a beverage. Ticket cost is $11 in advance or $12 at the door. There is also an option for a Hot Dog meal for $4 which includes a hot dog sandwich, bags of chips and a beverage.

Take a break from cooking and make plans with your friends, neighbors, and family to attend the Chamber’s Annual Chicken BBQ on Tuesday, July 9. The meal will be served in the air-conditioned and bug-free Fennimore Memorial building, 860 Lincoln Avenue, starting at 4:30 p.m. running to 7 p.m. or until all tickets are sold. Generally, we start the BBQ off with a small number of tickets.  The chamber hates to turn anyone away so that is the reason we encourage advance tickets.

Annual Community Awards will also be held in conjunction with the BBQ. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. The Chamber will recognize Citizen of the Year, Business of the Year, Family of the Year and Organization of the Year. The Chamber board will also select an individual from someone living outside of the Fennimore School District whose activities have gone over and above normal assistance to the chamber. There is great anticipation of the announcement from the committee of who will be recognized for 2019. Watch for photos and updates to be posted on the chamber’s web pages.

Southwest Tech Hosts Golden Knights July 2

Southwest Tech is bringing back the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute team! This jump will be held July 2, 2019 on Southwest Tech’s Campus, 1800 Bronson Boulevard. In an early celebration of the 4th of July, Southwest Tech is recognizing those who fought for the freedom of the United States by hosting an event to honor veterans and those currently serving in the military. This free and family-friendly event is open to the public. Gates will open at 8:00 a.m. to prepare for the scheduled jump time, at 10:00 am. As families arrive for the jump, they are invited to join into the many events.

The Fennimore police department, fire department, and EMTs, will have vehicles present and available for tours. A food stand will be offered by wives of the Fennimore Fire department members. In addition, free meals will be provided for veterans and active military. Any veteran and active military will also, receive a gift of appreciation given by Southwest Technical College. Activities including free Cheeky Monkey face painting and a rock climbing wall made possible by the U.S. National Guard.  Southwest Tech will have many give away items including beach balls, sunglasses, mini American flags, stickers, and GI Joe Army Paratrooper figurines, will be given out by volunteers as fun giveaways throughout the event.

Currently no conventional aviation museum exists where you can touch, or sit in, the cockpit of a fighter jet. However, the DreamBIG Mobile Interactive Aviation Museum trailer will be on site and offer A-7 and F-101/F-14 aircraft cockpits tours available for you to experience. Following the jump, the Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter will attempt to land. Attendees are encouraged to help the U.S. Golden Knights pack parachutes, get autographs, and tour the aircraft.

Fennimore families and surrounding communities are invited to join in the FREE celebration sponsored by Southwest Tech. You can find more information about the event on www.swtc.edu and on Southwest Tech’s Facebook page.

Fennimore Recycling Update

Just a short update on the current status of Fennimore Recycling. The new recycling contract begins with Town and Country on July 1. The first pick up by Town and Country will be garbage only and will take place Friday, July 5.

City crews have been busy delivering the totes to area residents. If you didn’t receive the color copy of the recycling calendar you can find it online or stop by the City Clerk’s office and pick one up. The City does apologize for any confusion caused during this changeover. Our rural neighbors in Fennimore Township went through this change last year and those residents tell us it just takes some time to get into the new routine.

Please note City offices will be closed Thursday, July 4 in recognition of the 4th of July holiday. Have a safe and fun holiday with family and friends as we celebrate our Nations birthday’
